Reflection

This class has helped me realize what I tend to do wrong while writing a paper and how to change that. I have learned to stay away from passive writing. I have learned to write a relatively long paper but at the same time getting to the point and not rambling on. It helped me with my grammer mistakes that occured repeatedly. It also made me realize that going over your papers several times is better than just once. Other than that I enjoyed this class and it helped me better myself in my writings.

With the final paper, it was definately easier to write when it was about something that I enjoyed and was interested in. It was also the longest paper I have had to write out of past writing classes.

Reading the Signs

By reading the signs in different subcultures, you learn what you are able to do and what not to do. At the beginning of my high school years, you get a rule book. If these rules are not followed there are going to be consequences. For example, if you get into a fight at school then you not only get into trouble at school, you also get punished for swimming too. You could get suspended from the team for half the season or get kicked off completely. Another example of thi would be if you get caught drinking or with drugs, not only will you get in trouble with school, the cops, you also get in trouble with swimming. My swim team coach had no tollerance for students who got suspended, so if you were suspended, then you were basically off the team. For swimming there are different rules to follow during a race. For example in a relay race, if you jump off the block before your teammate touches the wall or before the race is started, your team will get disqualified. Another example would be for breast stroke and bitterfly if you do not touch the wall with two hands every time then you will also get disqualified. Another sign that can be used for swimming is the sign that reads "No Running on the Pool Deck", if you do run on deck, you could potentially get hurt if you fall. To the extreme, you could fall and hit your head, get knocked out and then fall into the water. Another sign for swimming is the "Do Not Dive" sign written on the floor of the pool deck. By not listening to this rule, you could dive into the shallow end and hit your head, get knocked out and then have to be saved by the lifeguards if your at a pool with a lifeguard. If its at a pool without a lifeguard then by diving in the shallow end could get you killed by drowning because you would not be able to save yourself. By not following the signs in life there will always be consequences wether they are major or minor.

Literacy in swimming

Like I've said in a previous entry literacy does not only mean to read and write but to be able to understand and explain the topic at hand. My topic is swimming, to swim is the movements of limbs, fins, tail, etc. to move in the water. For other people swimming could mean just a way to relax or have fun in the summer time. For me swimming has a bigger meaning, it is my way to exercise and relieve stress. I also see the beauty of swimming as looking at the end of your lane before and after a race seeing your teammates cheering for you to do your best. Another thing I find that I love about swimming is that moment after you swim a race and look at the scoreboard for your times, seeing that you did your personal best is an amazing feeling. These were just a few things that i took away from my time during swimming.

My Holloween Activities

At the start of my day I have my one and only class in the morning on Friday. Once class is over, I am going to pack and et ready to go home. Around lunch time, my dad is going to pick me up to take our two and a half hour drive home. While I am at home, I plan to go out to eat with some friends at our favorite restaurant. This restaurant is named Pacific Blue, it is like a mongolian grill. After we eat we are going to rent a bunch of horror films and watch them all night. This activity may cause us to not sleep due to being too scared.

These activities may not seem too exciting but I think they are a good representation of who I am. I'm the type of person who would enjoy staying in with friends instead of going out partyin or dressing up in costumes. If I were to dress up I have no clue as to what I would dress up as, so I think it is better that I am staying in instead of stressing over what to wear for my costume.

The Outside View

For our next paper, we have to write about how we identify people into different subcultures. Such as, by what they wear, how they act, and what they say. So in class we had to brainstorm some different subcultures we may see while observing people in the "wild". Some of the different subcultures that I thought I may see would be; jocks or athletes, preps, gothic people, hippies, and those who are a part of the Greek Systems.

Aesthetics Brainstorming

Aesthetics is what people outside of the subculture percieve swimmers. Some examples would be clothing and brand name things. One of the main brand names that you think of when thinking about swimming would be Speedo. When swimmers are in public, you can always tell a swimmer from the tshirt, sweatshirt, or sweatpants they have on if the item of clothing has a swim logo or quote on it. While at the meet, the swimmer would be noticed by having a swim suit on, swim cap and goggles in hand, a towel near by , and wearing warm-ups while waiting to swim their event. These are just a few examples that I came up with so far.

Literacy

The official defintition for being literate is being able to read and write. Also having or showing knowledge of literature and writings.

Today we got into groups and defined Literacy together. We decided that being literate is more than being able to read and write, that its knowing and understanding what we read and write. Also to understand the everyday language to survive. If we didn't know the everyday language, it would be hard to live in this world. We have to be able to comprehend what people say to be able to respond back. Being literate would also help with the understanding of right from wrong.

The Best Book to Read to Understand Swimming

The best book to read to understand my subculture of swimming would have to be the autobiography Michael Phelps: Beneath the surface. This book would help George understand some of the strugles that swimmers need to go through. It also would help him understand how Michael felt right before a race and afterwards when he won. This book goes into great description of how he got to be so good and about S]some of his pre-race rituals he does before every race. This amazingly written book could help anyone understand the sport of swimming.

My Subculture Is the Better Than Yours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In class today we ave to try and prove why my subculture is better than anyone else's. My subculture is swimming, I believe that it is better than other subcultures for several reasons. By swimming, you are staying in shape and if your not in shape its a great way to get into shape. Swimming laps is a great workout, even just swimming in a pool with friends can be a workout, unless you just sit that. When you swim laps, for each stroke you use different muscles and through out the work out, you could possibly use most of the muscles in the body. Plus almost everyone likes to swim, now im not saying that everyone does just that almost everyone does. Whether if its just for fun or competetively. Also swimming have several forms; you could swim for fun, swim laps, cometetively swim, or even synchronized swimming. There are also classes that you can take to work out in the pool with weights and things. This is why I believe that swimming is better than yours and why you should join this subculture.
